How Much Do You Know About the Specifications and Installation of Pool Sand Filters?

A swimming pool sand filter is a common piece of filtration equipment, often referred to simply as a sand filter or filter tank. It is an essential component of the pool water circulation and treatment process. These filters are constructed with an inner liner wrapped in fiberglass and coated with high-strength synthetic resin. Equipped with filter media and a control valve (or "head"), they filter the water flowing through the tank. Suitable filter media include quartz sand, activated carbon, and biochemical filter materials. Below, AQUA-a manufacturer of swimming pool water treatment equipment-explains the specifications and installation of these sand filters.

I. Specifications and Types of Swimming Pool Sand Filters

Swimming pool sand filters are primarily categorized into top-mount, side-mount, and horizontal models. The choice depends on the specific requirements of the pool's water circulation and treatment system. Here, we detail the advantages of each type:

1. Top-Mount Sand Filter

As the name suggests, the top-mount sand filter features a control valve positioned at the top of the unit. The tank body is molded from resin and fiberglass, with the exterior reinforced by resin-impregnated fiberglass strands. This construction ensures high structural strength, corrosion resistance, and protection against sunlight and UV radiation, offering excellent value for money. These filters are widely used for water circulation and filtration in swimming pools, garden ponds, spas, and similar public water facilities.

Working Principle: Top-mount sand filters remove fine suspended impurities from pool water using filter sand. This sand serves as the filtration medium and is packed inside the tank body. When the multi-port valve is set to the "Filter" position, the pump forces pool water containing suspended impurities into the filtration piping and through the valve into the tank; fine suspended particles are then trapped and removed by the sand bed within. The filtered water passes through the collector assembly (laterals) into the central pipe, flows back through the multi-port valve to the outlet, and returns to the pool via the piping system. This process operates continuously, creating a complete filtration system comprising the pump, sand filter, and piping network.

2. Side-Mount Sand Filter

Designed using advanced swimming pool filtration technology, side-mount sand filters are suitable for various equipment room configurations. These durable, corrosion-resistant, and UV-resistant units are easy to operate and ideal for water circulation and treatment in swimming pools and landscape ponds. They deliver high-performance filtration; the deep filter bed ensures superior filtration results. These high-density fiberglass sand filters are manufactured using state-of-the-art technology. Optimized internal flow dynamics ensure thorough filtration, while the fiberglass-wound structure provides exceptional strength, chemical resistance, and UV protection. They are an ideal choice for general water treatment, industrial wastewater processing, and swimming pool circulation systems. An internal anti-corrosion coating and specialized processing allow for compatibility with various ozone generators.

3. Horizontal Sand Filter

Horizontal sand filters are constructed from reinforced resin and fiberglass, offering high hardness, wear resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. They provide superior water quality through increased filtration capacity. The turbidity and contamination levels of the filtered water are reduced thanks to the filter's large capacity. The interval between backwashing cycles is extended due to the filter bed's design; this reduces the frequency of backwashing, lowers water consumption, and minimizes wear and tear on the filter media.

Horizontal sand filters are an ideal choice for locations requiring high-volume filtration or those with limited space; a single horizontal unit can match the performance of three vertical filters of the same diameter simply by extending its length.

II. Installation of Swimming Pool Sand Filters

Installing and maintaining these swimming pool sand filters is straightforward; the only tools required are a screwdriver, a wrench, and sealing tape for the plastic unions. 1. The pool sand filter should be placed on a solid surface, such as concrete or a similarly durable base. The location should facilitate easy piping connections, operation of the control valve, and future maintenance.

2. Loading the filter media: The media should be loaded through the opening at the top of the filter tank.

a. Loosen the nut and remove the control valve assembly;

b. Cover the opening of the internal pipe with a plastic protective cap to prevent filter media from entering it;

c. Before loading the media, fill the tank approximately halfway with clean water; this acts as a cushion to prevent the media from causing excessive impact damage to internal components during loading.

d. Load the correct grade and quantity of filter media as required (ensure the central pipe remains centered and upright during loading, keep the protective cap on the pipe opening, and fill the tank to about 70% capacity). Level the media surface, then remove the protective cap.

3. Installing the control valve onto the filter tank:

a. Insert the control valve assembly (with its sealing O-ring) into the top opening of the tank; ensure the central pipe inside the tank aligns with and inserts into the opening at the bottom of the valve;

b. Tighten the nut with a wrench to secure the valve to the tank.

c. Install the pressure gauge (with its sealing O-ring) into the threaded port on the valve body; do not overtighten;

d. Connect the piping from the water pump to the valve port marked "PUMP".

4. Connect the return piping (leading back to the pool) to the valve port marked "RETURN"; the remaining connections are for the pump suction line and the filter tank's waste discharge line.

5. Connection of the water pump power supply system.

6. Inspect pipe connections for structural integrity and sealing; no leakage is permitted.

III. Precautions for Installing the Swimming Pool Sand Filter

1. Support the PVC piping connected to the inlet and outlet unions with brackets. Otherwise, once water flows through, the weight of the PVC pipe may cause it to sag, potentially cracking the unions.

2. Handling the handle of the sand filter valve: The plastic handle has a specific mechanical strength limit; applying force beyond this limit will inevitably cause it to break. Proper installation and stable operation require careful handling; rough installation practices that break the handle will significantly impair the normal functioning of the sand filter system.

3. Backwashing should be performed when the pressure reaches a certain level; therefore, ensure the inlet pressure to the sand filter does not exceed 2.5 MPa. If an engineering plastic pump is used upstream, the pump's head (lift) must not exceed 35 meters.

4. Preventing leaks at the filter valve head: When filling the tank with sand, take care to prevent sand from falling into the gaps of the multi-port valve. Sand entering the sealing area can abrade the seal or compromise its integrity.

5. Positioning the water diffuser: After unboxing a new sand filter, you will find a plastic fixture placed at the tank opening (using a top-mount filter as an example). Use this fixture to center the water diffuser at the opening before pouring the sand into the tank. Typically, the tank should be filled with quartz sand to two-thirds of its total capacity. Afterward, clean any residual sand from the tank opening, align the valve head with the screw holes, and secure it with the nuts. Once the assembly is complete, the pump can be powered on to test the flow rate and filtration performance.
