What is a swimming pool sand filter?
The sand filter is the core component of a swimming pool's circulation and filtration system, containing a bed of specially graded quartz sand. As pool water flows through the sand layer, microscopic impurities are trapped, thereby purifying the water.
The spaces between the quartz sand granules capture suspended particles as small as 20–40 microns, effectively removing impurities, suspended matter, algae, and other contaminants to restore the water's clarity. The filtered water then flows back into the pool, completing the circulation cycle.
In accordance with hygiene standards for swimming facilities, artificial swimming venues are required to be equipped with an independent and effective circulation, purification, and filtration system; operation without filtration facilities is strictly prohibited.
Principles of Sand Filter Water Purification
Water Intake: The circulation pump draws pool water into the top of the sand filter.
Multi-Layer Filtration: As the water flows downward through layers of quartz sand-arranged with particle sizes increasing from top to bottom-impurities such as suspended solids, oils, skin flakes, and hair are firmly trapped within the gaps between the sand grains.
Return of Clean Water: The filtered, clean water flows back into the pool through the outlet at the bottom of the sand filter, completing a purification cycle.

This type of physical filtration can reduce the consumption of disinfectants (such as chlorine), maintain stable residual chlorine levels in the pool, and lower the risk of the proliferation of microorganisms like bacteria and viruses.
Standardized Management of Sand Filters
Simply installing a swimming pool sand filter is not enough; proper daily management is crucial.
1 Regular Backwashing and Maintenance
Perform backwashing daily or weekly, depending on pool usage frequency and water quality, to prevent the sand bed from clogging or caking.
Regularly inspect the sand bed's level and cleanliness; replenish or replace the quartz sand as needed (typically every 1–2 years) to avoid issues like insufficient sand, which can compromise filtration efficiency.
2 Ensure Compliance with Circulation Cycles
The pool water circulation cycle should not exceed 4 hours, ensuring that the entire volume of pool water completes a filtration cycle within the specified timeframe.
3 Integrate with Disinfection Systems
Sand filtration alone cannot remove microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria; the system must be paired with disinfectants (e.g., chlorine or ozone) and pH adjusters. Additionally, water quality parameters-such as residual chlorine, pH levels, and urea content-must be monitored regularly.
